In Gedenken an Marcus Omofuma – Es war Mord!
Am 1. Mai 1999 wurde Marcus Omofuma während seiner Abschiebung von österreichischen Polizisten ermordet. Drei Beamte schnürten während des Fluges von Wien nach Sofia seinen Brustkorb mit Klebeband an den Sitz, verklebten ihm damit den Mund und Teile der Nase, wodurch er erstickte. Er wurde nicht älter als 26 Jahre.
Staat und Justiz gaben den Polizisten Rückendeckung: Die am Mord beteiligten Beamten wurden 2002 wegen „gefährlicher Tötung“ verurteilt, das Strafmaß von acht Monaten bedingt auf drei Jahre Bewährung ermöglichte den Verurteilten eine Weiterbeschäftigung als Polizeibeamte. Ihre Suspendierung vom Dienst wurde bereits am 5. Mai 2001, also bereits Monate vor der ersten Hauptverhandlung, wieder aufgehoben.
Nachdem vor 21 Jahren die Nachricht des Todes von Marcus Omofuma über die Medien verbreitet wurde, kam es in Wien sofort zu spontanen Protesten. Es folgten zahlreiche kleinere Aktionen, Großdemonstrationen und eine monatelange Mahnwache vor dem Innenministerium. Dass Marcus Omofuma durch die Knebelungen und Fesselungen der ihn begleitenden Polizisten erstickte, wurde im Wiener Stadtbild sichtbar: Auf zahlreichen Statuen und Plakaten wurden die Münder symbolisch verklebt. Die Proteste hatten eine große Wirkung und es gelang vorübergehend, die Abschiebepolitik in Frage zu stellen.
Wir gehen deshalb am 1. Mai 2020 um 14:00 Uhr auf die Straße, um an Marcus Omofuma zu gedenken und um die rassitische Gewalt, die vom Staat und der Polizei, zu thematisieren: Abschiebungen sind Folter, Abschiebungen sind Mord – Bleiberecht für Alle, jetzt sofort!
Haltet dabei stets einen Sicherheitsabstand von mindestens 1.5 Meter ein und bringt euren Mund-Nasen-Schutz mit. Reist – wenn möglich – nicht mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel an. Wir stellen auch Mund-Nasen-Schutz, Desinfektionsmittel und Handschuhe vor Ort zur Verfügung.

In memory of Marcus Omofuma – It was murder!
On May 1, 1999 Marcus Omofuma was murdered by Austrian police during his deportation. During the flight from Vienna to Sofia, three officers tied his chest to the seat with adhesive tape, taped his mouth and parts of his nose, causing him to suffocate. He did not live beyond the age of 26.
The state and the judiciary backed the police officers: the officers involved in the murder were convicted of “dangerous killing” in 2002, and the sentence of eight months conditional on three years’ probation enabled the convicts to continue working as police officers. Their suspension from duty was lifted on 5 May 2001, months before the first trial.
After the news of Marcus Omofuma’s death was spread through the media 21 years ago, there were immediate spontaneous protests in Vienna. This was followed by numerous smaller actions, large demonstrations and a month-long vigil in front of the Ministry of the Interior. The fact that Marcus Omofuma suffocated by the gagging and shackling of the police officers accompanying him became visible in the Vienna cityscape: on numerous statues and posters the mouths were symbolically taped. The protests had a great impact and temporarily succeeded in calling into question the deportation policy.
Therefore, we will take the streets on May 1, 2020 at 2 pm to commemorate Marcus Omofuma and to address the issue of racist violence of the state and the police: Deportations are torture, deportations are murder – right to stay for all, right now!
Always keep a safety distance of at least 1.5 meters and bring your mouth-nose protection with you. If possible, do not use public transport. We also provide mouth-nose protection, disinfectant and gloves on site.
